If there’s one movie that didn’t give me what I expected, it’s The Twilight Samurai. Not because it disappointed me—in fact, quite the opposite—but because with a title like that, you’d expect dozens of epic sword fights, flawless stances, flying katanas, and heads rolling. The film isn’t about that at all; it is much deeper and more beautiful than you might imagine.

A Story Told Through the Eyes of a Child
From the very beginning, the story is narrated by an elderly woman recalling her life at the age of five when her mother died of tuberculosis. This is how we meet Seibei Iguchi (played by Hiroyuki Sanada, whom you might recognize from the upcoming blockbuster 47 Ronin, Speed Racer, or Fallen Moon). Seibei is a low-ranking samurai in the Unasaka clan, responsible for his two young daughters and senile mother.
A Life of Quiet Strength and Fatherly Love
The story is told from the perspective of the youngest daughter, who watches her father’s struggle. Everyone around him urges Seibei to do this or that to advance, but he is content with his simple life. Despite living in poverty, Seibei is a fulfilled man, and that fulfillment is what he passes on to his daughters.
A Glimpse at Love and Life’s Choices
When Seibei’s childhood friend, Tomoe Iinuma (played by Rie Miyasawa), visits him, he briefly considers rebuilding his life. However, his social status and clan obligations make him believe it’s impossible, and he ends up rejecting her.
The Rare Samurai Fights and Their Meaning
Only two samurai fights happen in the entire film. One takes place in a very confined, dimly lit room—intense yet subtle. The other fight is quite special and meaningful.
Thought-Provoking Themes on Life and Perspective
This story will leave you reflecting on the life choices of the anti-hero and the way he views the world. What may seem like a sad and distressing life at first glance might not be so at all—it all depends on the perspective you choose to see it from.
Final Thoughts
The Twilight Samurai is a beautiful movie that goes beyond the sword clashes and reveals a touching, authentic human story.
