If someone had told me I was going to enjoy a film about the theme explored in Unbowed, I wouldn’t have believed them. In fact, the few American movies I’ve seen in this genre never truly captivated me. However, Unbowed is different. The key to its success lies in the main character and how his story unfolds.
Plot Summary
Kim Kyung Ho, a mathematics professor, never backs down. He firmly believes in his principles and refuses to compromise, no matter the consequences. This unwavering stance, however, leads to significant conflicts—especially with those in power, who are not easily intimidated by the truth.
Brilliantly portrayed by Ahn Sung Ki (The Tower, Top Star, Peacemaker), Professor Kim’s story is both inspiring and frustrating as he fights a system designed to suppress justice.

A Legal Battle Against Corruption
At the start of the film, Kyung Ho is imprisoned for an alleged crime. Despite his family’s efforts to hire lawyers, he rejects them one by one, believing he has done nothing wrong. Then comes Park Joon, a troubled but skilled attorney with a drinking problem, played by Park Won Sang (The Sleepless, Shark, Medical Top Team).
Despite their differences, Park Joon takes on the case, determined to defend a client who barely lets him speak. As the trial unfolds, the film exposes the corruption and personal biases that often dictate legal outcomes, showing how laws are ignored for the sake of power and influence.
Slow-Burning but Engaging Storytelling
Unlike mainstream legal dramas filled with action, Unbowed relies on long, thought-provoking dialogues and a gripping narrative. While some scenes may feel slow, the tension remains high as viewers root for Kyung Ho’s quest for justice.
One of the film’s highlights is the role of investigative journalism in uncovering the truth. Reporter Jang Eun Seo, played by Kim Ji Ho (You Don’t Know Women, Glass Slippers, Sorry and Thank You), plays a crucial part in exposing the injustices at play.
Why Unbowed Stands Out
This film is not your typical courtroom thriller. It’s an exceptional and thought-provoking drama based on a true story. What makes it so compelling is the unshakable character of Kyung Ho—a man who challenges authority in pursuit of justice.
Although it won’t have you on the edge of your seat or laughing out loud, certain moments are so absurdly unfair that they become darkly humorous. If you’re looking for something unique, Unbowed is the perfect choice for today’s watch.
